Ellie

On Saturday morning, 8/4, Whiskers received a call saying a single kitten was begging to come into a home in Gloversville.  One of Whiskers' fosters, Maria, arrived within two hours to pick up the kitten.   When Maria saw the kitten, she didn’t know what was wrong with her, only that she needed to see a vet immediately.    All the Whiskers vets were closed on Saturday afternoon, so Maria took her to her own vet as they have Saturday hours.

The kitten, later named Ellie, was immediately diagnosed with flea anemia and put on iron supplements.  She was borderline for requiring a blood transfusion but the vet decided to try the supplements first because she weighed just a few pounds.  The vet also noticed a pellet under her skin where she was apparently shot.   The kitten was also limping but this injury was secondary at this point since her life was on the line.

Within a few hours of a flea bath, flea treatment, and iron supplement, she began to improve.  It’s clear she was a fighter and had a strong will to live.

Unfortunately, when Ellie was spayed a month later, the vet uncovered two more pellets lodged in poor little Ellie when they took x-rays. They were able to remove two of the pellets but the third pellet shattered in the growth plate of her femur, meaning her leg may never grow any bigger.  They also discovered that she has a bone infection and is currently being treated with antibiotics for six weeks.

Ellie is expected to make a complete recovery and will be available for adoption once she is 100%.
