Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways to volunteer for Whiskers - the three most common being caring for cats at our shelter in Albany, fostering cats and/or kittens in your home, or working at our adoption center at PetSmart.

Shelter Volunteer:

We need volunteers to work at our shelter to care for the animals and the facilities. If you’d like to see what it’s like to volunteer at the Whiskers shelter in Albany, watch the two videos below.  Volunteers work either a morning or evening shift and commit to once per week or once every other week.

Foster Home:

Foster parents give a temporary home to rescued cats until they are adopted.  We need fosters for pregnant cats, moms with kittens, orphaned kittens, and adults.  Fostering FAQs

PetSmart Adoption Centers:

  • Whiskers is looking for volunteers or substitutes for our adoption centers at PetSmart in Clifton Park and East Greenbush. This requires a once every other week commitment of about an hour to care for the cats and kittens waiting for adoption.
  • We need volunteers to work at the center itself, taking care of the cats and kittens. Volunteers work for about an hour, either on a morning or an evening shift and are required to commit to work at least once every other week.
  • We also need people to work during our adoption clinic hours.
    • The clinic hours for the Clifton Park store are: Thursday 6-7:30pm; Saturday and Sunday 11-2.
    • The clinic hours for the East Greenbush store are:  Monday, Wednesday, Friday 6-8pm; Saturday 11-1; and Sunday 1-3
    • You must be comfortable interacting with the public and be able to talk to potential adopters about our adoption procedures.
